Penguins: an Overview

The popularity of penguins is the highest of all time. It is largely due to the hit movie The March of the Penguins, that such interest in penguins has arisen recently. Until this film was released in theaters, I knew most humans that penguins could be a very strong and determined animal. This brief article is to report the facts one way penguins.

Penguins are unusual looking little birds, with plumage style tuxedo, and walks like a duck that makes many people think that birds are clumsy. For most of us, that perception changed when the film March of the Penguins came out and made us take note of the emperor penguin species. The film tells an amazing story of trials and difficulties of these emperor penguins have to go through just so they can have a family and be parents. If you are one of the few people still have seen this movie, you should check it out soon. It's funny in some scenes, and can make you mourn in other scenes. After seeing the film, which will a whole new relationship and raise awareness of these birds.

Above all, the Penguins have a limited habitat. They primarily are considered as living of Antarctica, but a few species of penguin found in cool coastal regions of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. There is also a kind penguin who lives in the Galapagos Islands, and are called Galapagos penguins. However, penguins live in the Arctic.

The largest types of penguins are the Emperor penguins, which can get very large as an adult, and reach an average of 48 inches when adult. The smallest penguin known as the rockhopper penguin, which comes only twelve inches tall on average.

The penguins make their hunting and feeding in the water. There is plenty of food that are frozen in the ice of Antarctica, so they have to go underwater to find food. A standard diet of penguins consists of fish, squid and krill. A penguin is a great swimmer and can dive deep underwater, holding their breath for several minutes under water.

As the march of the penguins in the film shows, emperor penguins have a very unique breeding cycle and interesting. Penguins breed once a year, and only in specially chosen areas known as colonias, which serve as breeding ground for penguins. Like some other creatures, a return to the same penguin colony each year to breed. Penguins will travel sometimes 60 or 70 miles or more just to reach the colony.

Once Penguins reach the breeding grounds (colonies), male and female penguins fighting over each other and eventually find their perfect match for a couple. The only female penguin lays an egg. After laying the egg, the female penguin gives the egg to the male care, which then keeps on top of your feet do not touch ice. The male penguin big stomach hanging over the egg to cover and keep warm from strong winds and freezing cold weather.

The male penguin will do it for nine consecutive weeks and not eat food all the time. During these nine weeks, the male will lose nearly half their body weight, and the penguin mother took the opportunity go to sea and find food for herself, so you can replenish your own resources, which were drained during pregnancy and while laying the egg. The female later return to the male penguins, usually about the same time that the egg is due to hatch, and change places with the male penguin. Then back to sea to find food itself and to regain your strength.
