Krill Oil For Women – Are They Better Than Fish Oils?
There is much debate going on at the moment about krill oil for women and whether in fact a quality fish oil is better. Part of the problem is that only a handful of proper studies have been carried out on krill while fish oil has been studies for decades. Here are some facts that may interest you.
It has to be said that the average oil from krill is less contaminated than an average fish oil as they tend to come from the Antarctic which is still extremely clean. What they are lacking however is enough of the most important omega 3 fatty acid – DHA.
DHA is the most important of the main fatty acids and is even present in breast milk. Most health experts advise women to use a DHA supplement while they are pregnant and afterwards too as it helps with the child’s development, lowers the risk of postnatal depression and contributes to an easier labour.
A good quality fish oil will contain a daily serving of at least 500mg of DHA while krill oil for women only delivers 90mg! This means you are getting robbed of the many benefits, including easing of the symptoms of pms which so many krill oils advertise.
All this and they cost up to four times as much! Check out this for yourself by checking the labels of different krill products and you will see what I mean.
Of course I am comparing them to a quality fish oil that has been molecularly distilled to remove all the toxins and that has a higher amount of DHA compared to the other less useful fatty acid EPA. Most fish oils do have lower amounts of DHA as it is more expensive to manufacture and source but now you know what to look for, it will be much easier to find them.
The fish oil I personally take contains high DHA levels and is very pure, coming from the sustainable and pristine waters of New Zealand. This is the other worrying thing about the krill.
Over harvesting of these creatures will severely upset the food chain and at present there is no limit of the amount that can be taken. Every other species depends on krill for food including those at the top of the marine food chain – whales.
So some food for thought there on the effectiveness of krill oil for women and its many drawbacks, especially the lack of health benefits you get compared to a good fish oil.
